Re: Driving and Sailing ... where to go from here(?)

Jack,

Thank you very much for your extensive reply. A few notes interspersed
below:

You're more than welcome, as you can see this is a group that has pretty much learned everything there to be learned the hard way.

<snip>

It sound like you were were definitely doing the right things but on a bad luck roll. Sometime with Windows I think it can relate to how you hold your mouth.

Re the PCMCIA and ExpressCards, thank you, I will store that info away,
just in case.

However, the more I consider it, and since I now don't even have that
laptop anymore to experiment with, I think that I am leaning more and more
toward just getting a new USB-capable GPSr, to go with a new laptop.

Sounds like a sound idea to me. I've hardly used my serial to USB adapters since I got USB GPSRs. USB is much faster too.

On the new laptop, watch out for the new Vista operating system. There appear to be some issues with the Garmin USB drivers not being available yet. I never consider upgrading to a new Windows OS until a year of so after its release. I never did get around to moving up to XP, I'm still running Windows 2000 and am still very happy with it. My next OS will probably be XP, not Vista.

But, as with the other folks, I wish I had been smart enough to have talked
with you earlier! <g>

Thanks and best regards,
David

Same to you, check in here or on the alt.satellite.gps.garmin newsgroups and you'll usually be able to get the answer you need.

Cheers,

Jack
