Re: Question re fast charging charging Eneloop batteries

I have a fast "smart" (1 hr GP) charger I have used for 3 years.
When I first used it I worried that its use would shorten the life of the
cells. After charging a set of fully discharged cells they are almost too
hot to handle. However, this seems not to have been a problem as I have not
yet had to discard any cells. The oldest set 1800 mah have had approx 200
charge cycles.

I have now relegated these older cells to back up status and run the GPSr on
a 2500mah set. but the self discharge means I recharge the backup set
every 2 weeks or so with out actually using them.
Now I have bought a set of Eneloops and intend using them for my digital
camera and as a backup for the Garmin.
Question: Anyone know if the Eneloops will suffer any damage if charged on
the one hour smart charger ?

Probably not. I'm currently conducting a test with Eneloop
batteries, charging a selected set with a quick charger and all
others slowly.

What I observe is that the Eneloop batteries don't seem to get
as hot as older ones. Apparently they have a low internal
resistance.

Don't worry about the temperature too much. If they are just
about too hot to handle, they are probably still under 50°C
(approx. 120°F). That doesn't damage them. 70°C (approx. 158°F)
would be another matter, but then you'd get blisters from
handling them.

Humans perceive 40°C as warm and about 50°C as too hot to keep
between fingers for an extended period, because body cell
protein begins to denature at above 42°C. The body has several
protective mechanisms to handle higher temperatures, but the
first and simplest one is to let go. (:-)
