Re: Garmin GPS12: 5v power from usb?

My concern is current- the specs say this unit draws 1 watt, which
seems like a lot, particularly since the battery life seems
significantly better than with my old GPS38.

Based on the battery life I'd guess the power is significantly lower,
maybe .6W - at least if you're not using the backlight.

But note that the 12 will still draw power from the internal AA cells
if you supply it with external power at only 5V. To switch to using
the external power only it's better to up the voltage to nearly 8.
When I powered my 12 from an external 6V battery I would put a little
piece of tape over the internal battery contact so the AA cells inside
wouldn't run down.
