I am hoping to get some clarification on the following questions:

1) Is the B&W eTrex Legend (and all other Garmin WAAS capable units) capable of receiving and processing Differential GPS signals?

The handheld Garmin receivers I have all support "Garmin DGPS", which is
for connecting to Garmin differential correction devices and an RTCM
interface for those devices that send SC-104 format data.

The 12XL is a pre-WAAS receiver but supports RTCM.

I don't know about the automotive receivers.

Dan,

It sounds like Garmin GPS receivers are capable of receiving DGPS signals, if equipped with an auxiliary DGPS receiver (refer to:

Q. What is Differential GPS (DGPS)? What is the GBR 21/GBR 23 Differential Beacon Receiver?

A. [abridged] The Garmin GBR 21 and GBR 23 (both are no longer in production or available) were optional receivers designed to receive the U.S. Coast Guard's differential signals and supply these signals to your Garmin GPS unit. When connected to a compatible Garmin GPS, the GBR 21 and GBR 23 will increase its accuracy to under 10 meters when within receiving range of differential beacon stations.

I realize that for the most part, WAAS has "replaced" DGPS, as far as increased accuracy is concerned, but I am still wondering if WAAS is disabled on any given Garmin GPS, will accuracy still be improved via DGPS? From your response and the above FAQ citation, it sounds like the answer is no, unless the GPS is connected to a secondary DGPS receiver.
