Does any manufacturer make a GPS receiver -- yet -- that lets you upload your own image file (like a scanned map) to use as the background map?
You should be able to do that with PDA or Laptop based solutions (e.g. something like Oziexplorer). See for instance:-

A 'real' handheld GPS works with vector mapping, rather than a picture. Pictures scale really really badly (look at Google Earth and note how it needs a different picture loaded each time you zoom in a bit .. and those pictures are big suckers compared to the memory on most GPS handsets).
