Re: Garmin GPSMAP 296 Spoken messages/alerts in aviation mode?

Normally in a PA-28 and C-172 pilots don't wear parachutes. If you hit

I knew that -- my original comment was supposed to be a joke!

My concern is that too many pilots develop the habit of relying on
their gadgets instead of on their airmanship and end up actually
compromising their safety margins instead of enhancing them.

I have been flying since 1972 and have made at least my share of
mistakes with each new wave of gadgets including those intended to
enhance my safety margins.

Everyone sometimes can come in a situation were weather is marginal.

One word: FILE!

Terrain doesn't change that often,
and obstacles also don't change very often

It doesn't have to be often, it only needs to be once in the wrong
place when you are scud running because you believe your 296 will warn
you.

The obstacles do change often: take a look at the latest NACO Chart
Bulletins. There are lots of new uncharted obstacles out there.

If you're IFR rated then read those JEPP changes you are filing. If
you aren't talk to someone who is and ask to see the JEPPs and look at
the changes.

OK, I will shut up now since this is pretty far off the basic GPS
topic.
