I'm talking about handheld consumer GPS. I've used OziExplorer to make track maps before. And one new model pulls maps from Google Maps. But I want one that lets me load my own map (image file). Of course they'd rather sell you the maps. But I find no point in buying a new GPS receiver until this feature is available. We have the technology. Is anyone making one yet?

Looking at the consumer grade models available now, I'd have to say that the Garmin is less unfriendly than any of the others as far a making your own maps. Maybe even friendly. It is laborious effort, maybe even not easy, but there is a quite a bit of mapping available for special interest uses and third world places.

I don't know that anyone is taking the lead to make and give away for free all the mapping that Garmin sells but I can understand that.

Google for map making for Garmin's and you might be surprised at what you can do for yourself.
