I want to map about 15 km of paths in a park as accurately as I can. I have recorded several track logs for each path and now want to average them to represent the most probable location of each path.
Currently I'm just doing it by eye using Mapsource. There must be more rigorous techniques around. Suggestions?
"as accurately as I can" probably doesn't require cm accuracy for a path. What would you consider good enough? +/- 10m? 3m?
Yesterday I walked along a path beside the Okanagan River between Skaha and Vaseux Lakes with frequent stops for photos of two Ospreys. Looking at the active track, I can see which side of the path I was on and can clearly see where I stepped off the path to get a view clear of a bush or tree. If that is good enough perhaps I can help.
I'm using a Garmin GPS-V with a Garmin GA 25BNC Remote Antenna. You can see the antenna at
http://www.gpscentral.ca/accessories/ga25bnc.htm
I have a hat with a Velcro closed pocket in the top. The antenna goes in that with the unused length of lead coiled up in a jacket pocket. I have enough lead left uncoiled so that I can hand hold the GPS or stick it in a jacket pocket leaving both hands free for the camera or whatever. This antenna has a built in amplifier (about 26db gain) and, being on top of my head, has a full half sphere view. Being in a valley, I cannot always get WAAS but when I do I usually get 2 or 3m EPE. Otherwise, usually 4 to 6m.
Out of curiosity, what part of Alberta are you in?
Ted
