Looking at the consumer grade models available now, I'd have to say that
the Garmin is less unfriendly than any of the others as far a making
your own maps. Maybe even friendly. It is laborious effort, maybe even
not easy, but there is a quite a bit of mapping available for special
interest uses and third world places.

Well put, Jack... Look what's coming out:
http://abovethetimber.com/GPSmaps.htm

-I would say, it must mot very difficult (that's easy for me
to say!)... These maps are created from 10m DEM data to
come up with the contour lines... Roger says, however, he
has two computers running 24 hours a day to create the
maps... (I suggested he rent a Cray, but it couldn't afford
it)...

Thanks for the link Jack, that site is new to me.

That it is a perfect example of maps that can result from a individual efforts. Here is another site that shows the efforts of Seagull, one of the regulars here:

http://www.aracnet.com/~seagull/ORTopo/

Seagull's efforts have inspired me and I got started trying to do some conversions suing DEM data earlier this winter but got stalled. I need to get back to it...

I am not at all intimidated by the file sizes mentioned above (1-2 MB for a 15 minute map). I want good mapping for small areas that are of personal interest to me and don't mind at all that I may have to change memory cards or something to manage that.

Jack
