I guess where we differ is in the interpretation of exactly what those
rights might be. If Garmin sells someone a mapping gps receiver, I do
not believe they have the right to tell the person what maps he may or
may not load into that receiver.

Are these the so-called "rights" you'd like to see respected, or are
you talking about something else?

They might make it marginally more difficult for someone to do this,
by not supplying the format of the loaded map image, but that in no
way implies that it is illegal to do so, IMHO.

They will not supply their format to the map company you quoted, but
that does not prevent said map company from supplying maps, nor should
it. You don't see them shutting down their map sales web site, do
you?

I would not expect Garmin to supply many companies - if any at all -
with their img format, as that might be construed in a court to always
maintain such format. Garmin could leave itself open to future legal
action should it change the format thus causing financial hardship to
such licensed companies.

I've read reports in these newsgroups of people sending receivers back
to Garmin for repair when they are loaded with non-Garmin maps, and
getting no flak - and good service - from Garmin. What might this
indicate about Garmin's position on this?
