I did the same sort of test on my 60CSx when I first got some of the
eneloops (also from Fry's as I recall; no date on the package). I got
virtually the same out of the package results as you - 12.27 hours - but
only 17 hours for the fully charged batteries (I used the same batteries,
and used the slow charger that came with them).

Based on previous tests with various NiMH capacities, the 23 hours seems to
me high for 2000 mAh batteries; even my 17 hours looked to me to be high; I
would expect to get 17 hours in a 60CSx or 76CSx with something more like
2400 mAh NiMHs.

myself, I picked up a set of Sanyo eneloop AA cells:

I used one pair as it came, directly from the factory, but after an
unknown timeperiod on the Fry's shelves.

In my 76 CSx, this pair lasted for 12:11, i.e. 12+ hours, which is a
useful lifetime for something you need to use immediately.

The other pair was charged in a good 2-hour charger, with voltage &
temperature sensing, and then taken out of the charger.

About 6 hours later, when the first pair ran down, I inserted the second
(re-charged) pair, and it behaved significantly better, lasting 23:28,
i.e. almost twice as long.

This means that you probably shouldn't depend on having more than 50%
available in eneloop batteries that has been out of the charger for a
month or two!

I am currently doing the same test with a freshly charged pair of 2700 mAh
regular NiMH AAs, I'll report back when the GPS runs down.
