I have posted this topic in both sci.geo.satellite-nav andDavid,
alt.satellite.gps.garmin. Sorry for that, but I am assuming that the
participants may be different.
Short Description: I have the latest versions of OziExplorer, (3.95.4q),
Garmin's Trips and Waypoint Manager (3.00)'s USB driver, (grmnusb.sys:
2.2.0.4), installed on two different XP home computers and on one XP
laptop. Using the same Garmin 76CSx GPS, connected via the same USB cable
that was supplied with my Garmin GPS, Ozi locks up on each of these three
computers when running in Ozi's Moving Map mode, on the same map, in Ozi's
PVT transfer mode.
More Description: My initial test was on the road, using my laptop with
the above configuration. From startup of the Mobile Map mode, Ozi appears
to run fine for a while, then, at seemingly random and unpredictable
periods of time from Mobile Map startup, (say anywhere from two to 20
minutes), the "Start/Stop" button in Ozi's Moving Map Control panel greys
out, and the flashing Moving Map "On" indicator in the lower left corner of
the screen freezes. Then I have to kill Ozi and reload it and reinitialize
the map again, etc., before I can start the Moving Map mode again.
My initial thought was that this must be another GPS/USB/laptop problem,
because I have had so many problems with my previous laptop and USB-serial
GPS interfaces. However, this appears to be a quite different problem.
My next test was to run the laptop configuration in my office, stationary,
to be sure that there were no automobile influences. Same behavior. I
then ran the same test on each of my adjacent XP machines. Same behavior.
(viz. all three machines were sitting next to each other during these
tests.)
Based upon these tests, it would appear that I should conclude that the
problem is not likely an XP hardware or software problem, but instead more
likely an Ozi-GPS-USB problem. Has anyone experienced a similar problem,
and can you please give me any clues as to how I might address it?
Thank you very much for any thoughts,
David
