interesting... so.. you can use...a Magellan PC software product to
download maps to the unit but not directly - instead on a card via a
separate card reader?
Magellan's MapSend is a parallel product to Garmin's MapSource.
I quit using Magellans with the Meridian models but on those, there were no USB connections on the GPS receivers yet so building maps to the card in a reader was a wonderful way to be able to do it. It was much, much faster than sending the same map to internal memory via a RS-232 serial port. And you could have much larger map files on the SD cards too.
At that time, Magellan Meridians had an advantage over the Garmins in that they could use external memory (SD cards) to store mapping whereas the Garmin handhelds were limited to what was available for map storage in free internal memory. But Garmin has caught up with them in that area now.
With Garmin's 76Csx.. apparently you can assemble separate TOPO,
marine and Road Maps (ones that can autoroute) to the unit... but only
as a single file... (but you can do this either directly to the unit
or separately on a card reader (I think).
Yes, you can do that. As GPS receivers became USB connectible, it became much easier to leave the memory cards in the receiver and upload maps to the card with it still in the GPS receiver. And uploads to the GPS by USB were much faster than they were by RS-232 serial.
The single file limitation arises from the fact that the software in the 76CSx will only read and use a single file name from one specific location (\garmin\gmapsupp.img) on the memory card. MapSource overwrites that file if you upload a new or different map.
But if you are stubborn or clever you can do things like renaming folders and files, copying them to hard drives for storage, and things like that to avoid having to build map files from scratch with MapSource every time you want to change one.
Garmin has not given the 76CSx any card utilities that will let you rename files and folders from the GPS or select different files from multiple folders. So you have to do that from a PC with a card reader or via the Mass Storage Mode.
do these questions make any sense?
Yes.
