thanks for the clear explanation of the two flavors. I did visit the
websites and noticed tha that there are many other brands now on the
market besides Garmin and Magellan... for instance Navman and Cobra..
even Ran McNally...
and was wondering if map data is always obtained via the manufacturer
of the unit or .. are some maps obtained through the two primary map
provider companies?

I think all or nearly all of the GPS makers buy the mapping data and
they process it to work with their software and hardware. There are
minor differences in the look and feel of the presentation as it is seen
on the GPS receiver's display but the actual roadway data (and some or
all of the POI data too) is from the mapping companies.

Five or six years ago, there were several different brands of GPS
receivers on the market that all had a nearly identical look and feel in
use and they all cited NavTeq for copyrights. I think maybe NavTeq may
even be involved in selling a complete package with data and also a user
interface or "front end" for presenting and using their data. It may be
that the front end can be branded or personalized and run on anyone's
hardware that wants to sell a GPS receiver.

jack .. you can't be too far from the Delorme Store... in Freeport ..
right?

Right, they are down a little north of Portland, an hour or so away.
DeLorme's original Street Atlas program played a major part in my
becoming thoroughly addicted to using GPS.

I ran SA up through SA 9. They lost me on the bizarre/non-Windows GUI
or user interface they came up with for SA 2000 (2001?) and I eventually
moved on to other things. Also the DeLorme data was getting a little
out of date in the early 2000's. I've not looked at DeLorme's stuff in
a couple of years now. I voted for Garmin with my wallet (hardware and
software) and I'm committed to them for at least a while.

I was a fan of Delorme also... but for whatever reason... they did not
stay focused (in my view) on what customers were really after... which
I admit is not easy task to start with.. but Garmin... did...

The PN-20 has potential... if they can deal with some of the issues
that keep it from being ready for prime time.. but I'm not
encouraged... at least yet.. that they are focused...

...but I always like to stop by their store.. whenever I'm in the
area :-)
