I've created a map which I can download to my Garmin 276C, which has a
Garmin Data Card for storage. Let's call it mymap.img. Now I want to
share that map with a friend. His Garmin takes SD cards. Does Garmin
store the map on an SD card the same way Windows does? In a directory
on the SD chip, or are maps stored on SD chips such that Windows can't
even copy/move the file?
On the handhelds that have microSD cards, MapSource puts the map in a \garmin folder off the root of the card and the file is called gmapsupp.img.
I have a 76Cx and have not found any other file name or location to work, it simply does not find the map at startup.
If your map is from a locked MapSource product (BlueChart for example) it will only work on a single GPS receiver because it is unlocked to that units Unit I.D. If its the wrong GPS receiver for the unlock you'll get an error message on startup.
Try putting his SD card in a reader or connecting his receiver with the card in place and creating a map to it from MapSource. Then see if it works.
If you say what the map is from and the models involved it may get you better answers. Not everything made is compatible with every mapping product. You can find product compatibility links on the Garmin pages for the different models.
