I want to geosynch picture with location using my GPS track
log and a map. Everything mentions jpeg; will it also work
with RAW? I realize you didn't discuss the commercial
products but do you know if they are programmed to look only
into EXIF and to use only jpeg formatted photos?
If you are with Adventure Cycling, another question I posed
considering navigating an established route (one for the above
ride) received a curt response saying I only had to identify
the route and ask the GPS to navigate it. I wanted the normal
alerts telling me the turn was near, etc. I have the Garmin
Map 60csx and when I tried that with a route I created for a
local ride, I didn't get those alerts. Since you can't
actually see what I did wrong, would you explain what I should
do with AC routes and my GPS to get the alerts for following
turns along the route.
Hi Doug,
Yes, I did those GPS routes for Adventure Cycling. Sorry I don't
know about the commercial programs and how they deal with RAW files.
The data are certainly in those files because they show up in the
EXIF when a PC program converts them to JPG. However, every camera
has a different RAW format, so keeping up with them is a major
programming task. Surely someone here has tried those programs on
D-80 RAW. If no one shows up soon, try a new thread with D-80 and
GPS sync in the subject.
Do I guess correctly that you will follow the Great Parks North
road-bike route, not the Great Divide mountain-bike route? The
latter has a few stretches on roads, but not many.
Getting turn-by-turn instructions is straightforward once you have
all the parts in place. Start with maps that provide them, such as
City Navigator, City Select, or Metroguide 4.01. When you build a
map set in MapSource to be loaded into the GPSR, open the Maps tab
in the left pane and be sure to check "Include route calculation
data." Then when you ask the GPSR to navigate the route, check
"Follow road." That option normally comes up right after you click
Navigate, but it can be turned off. Somewhere in System Setup there
has to be a place to re-enable the option if you need it. (I don't
have the 60CSx to see just where.)
The Adventure Cycling routes were built to work on non-mapping
receivers, the lowest common denominator, so to speak. Given the
luxury of a mapping receiver, you can remove many of the
intermediate waypoints that keep the straight-line route segments
near the curving roads. "Follow road" does a much better job. Do
leave waypoints at places of interest along the way, so you can see
the distances to them as you go.
The ACA routes were also built to be used in both directions. You
will have to move a few waypoints to the correct side of divided
highways to avoid some bizarre routing instructions.
If you don't have it already, get the GPS Data User Guide from the
"GPS Information" link on the ACA web site. It has a lot more detail
about the routes. Please write back with how you fare.
