So I went with a Garmin 76Cx.
The major and immediate gains over the Meridians were:
- SiRF III chip set
- Brighter display with better resolution
- AA cell power, not a battery pack
- Better battery life
- Better basemap with autorouting included on basemap roads
- Much better marine navaid database included
- More route and waypoint storage
- Unlimited automatic track storage
I am pretty objective about GPS receivers and not one to recommend what
I have or simply by brand. I honestly don't think anything is better
than the "x" models right now.

Thanks for thorough comments Jack...I'll definitely look at it.
Have you used it with Ni-MH batteries? What size memory card are you
using?
I use a 60 CSX (which is basically the same thing, with the compass/barometer added) which ALWAYS runs on NiMH. I get about 15 hours, depending what I'm doing (logging a trackpoint every second) on 2600mAHr cells. Most folks with 60C/76C(s, CX, csx) run them on NiMH, for cost and environmental reasons.
As to memory card, you can use anything up to 2GB, although there is a limit (2,048 or so?) on number of map segments. Personally I can get all I need in the 64MB that came with the unit (I develop custom maps so I reload frequently, so I try not to load too much - even with USB2 loading 2GB is gonna take a while).
One thing Jack didn't mention is that if you want to make your own maps (quite a lot of effort) there are way more (cheap/free) tools to do it for Garmin than for any other brand. Hence there is more custom mapping for out-of-the-way places (not an issue if you just want to drive up the highways on mainland USA).
