You can also use Hyperterminal (Start > Programs > Accessories >

If you open the Device Manager and then plug the Navibe in, you should
be able to see the virtual COM port appear under the Ports COM & LPT
category at the end of the plug and play process.
Thank you guys,
Yeah I know where to find out about the port number. My laptop has two
USB ports and depending on which one I plugged the GPS into it created
either com 4 or com 5.
I have also tried Hyperterminal but there was no stream displayed at
all.
I am in for a heavy work period starting tomorrow morning. So I took
the Navibe back the shop today. Just turned it in and got a receipt
for the money I had paid. I did not bother picking up another unit yet
since I thought I had better wait for another batch of them coming in.
I have one older USB GPS and that one works fine in either of my
laptops so I do not think there is any lack of power on the USB.
Somewhere I think I have read something about testing a USB GPS with
an Ohm meter, to see if there is a short somewhere.
Again thank you for valuable suggestions!
