Re: Unlocking Garmin maps?

All,

I'm looking at City Navigator v8 to get more detail on my eTrex Legend
C, but I'm a little confused...

Will the new maps simply "add" the detail, or will I be viewing a
"new" map?

And if the latter, does my old map delete?

And if no, is there a way to toggle between them?

And what happens when I "drive" through the "new map" "old map"
boundary?

And lastly, what does "unlock the maps" mean? Is this like a security
copyright protection...can I install the maps on more than one PC?

Thanks much!

I can't help with licences since my stuff is quite old: eMap,
WorldMap, Europe R&R and Europe Metroguide, but I may be able to help
with some of your other questions. I don't use this stuff much
anymore but I used to use it a lot.

In MapSource, you should see a combo box in the top left of the screen
which shows the currently selected map. You can use it to select
between each of the installed maps or even no map. Only one map at a
time is displayed by MapSource.

You can build a map set to send to your device using segments from
multiple maps. You can select overlapping segments so that a
particular point is covered multiple times. There is an order of
priority for my maps it is (best first): Metroguide, R&R, WorldMap,
Base (built-in). So, if all three maps covered the point you are
looking at, you would see the Metroguide segment. If you want one of
the others, there is a menu option in the device to disable types of
maps. If you disable the Metroguide maps, the R&R would show
through. I don't find this very useful.

However, I do build map sets of mixed types frequently just not
overlaps. The reason that I would do this is that the nice Metroguide
maps are big and I have limited memory. For a long trip, I would
select Metroguide segments for my destination and places along the way
that I may want to stop at. For intermediate places, I would use R&R
which cover the area in not so good but still useful detail using much
less memory. The segment sizes (geographical) and boundaries mostly
matched so this mixed approach did not usually require overlaps.
Occasionally it would. Sometimes one R&R segment corresponded to four
Metroguide segments. So, if I wanted MG detail for one but R&R for
the other, I would have an overlap. This still probably used less
memory than all 4 MG segments.

For very long trips covering a large area, I would sometimes mix in
WorldMap segments. This covered a very large area so there would
probably be overlaps. However, since the accuracy and detail is much
poorer than the other types, I would rarely want to override the
unit's priorities and show the WorldMap.
