Do topographical, not road, maps of Europe exist for use with a GPS?

I have searched the Garmin and TomTom sites and done Google searches
for the answer to this question and have come up empty handed. I can
find lots of topo maps of the U.S. & Canada, but not of Europe.

Specifically, I am looking at GPS topo maps of Italy to use on hikes
there.

Maps for BITS of Europe exist (eg UK Topo V2 .. which just covers the UK). However there are some places which have free contour maps for lots (if not all) Europe, derived from NASA SRTM DEM data .. I believe you may need to register, and if you want it on DVD rather than electronic download you will have to pay for the media/shipping.
