John - Thank you. I acknowledged your reply an hour or so ago, and
don't see it, so I assume it may have gone astray.

My wandering memory returned, finally. To get track lengths in feet,
use GPS Trackmaker (free).
Upload to Trackmaker program (just did with my 76).
Press "Edit", and then "Select All" on the drop-down menu.
Then, on the Toolbar, select the sum symbol, for "Cartographic
length"
A Report Window opens, giving the Active Log Cartographic Length in
feet, to .001 foot. (Obvious overkill...)

I don't know what track recording would be the most accurate, auto,
time, or distance. I'll let you know by direct email if you wish to
know my results. I would appreciate reading yours also, and anyone
elses.

The more trackpoints you have the more accurately will the track portray your actual course of travel. But it will use up the track memory quicker too. But then, that may not matter if you have the Log Track to Data Card option turned on and have free space on the data card. That is the option that saves *all* track points to a *.gpx file on the microSD card.

The Saved Tracks (up to 20 of them) are limited to 400 or so points and do not contain the date/time data. They are useful for use on the GPS receiver but much less useful than the *.gpx files as far as fully documenting your tracks.

But then the *.gpx files are less useful on a realtime basis as they cannot be used from the GPS. You have to open them from MapSource or another third party utility (my preference is the not free but wonderful GPS Utility,http://www.gpsu.co.uk/).

If you are collecting trackpoints and have the wrap and overwrite option turned on, and the Log Track to Data Card option turned on, your track log on the Track page will go to 99%, and stay there, when 10,000 points are collected. It will commence overwriting the oldest track points and in the mean time all track points (with full data, lat/long, date/time, and elevation) will be logged to the *.gpx file on the microSD card.

It is a somewhat complex or confusing scheme but it is wonderful as far as the capabilities it gives you.

Now, if I can just remember where I parked my car...

That is what those remote car lock are for (unless you are deaf). Kind of like audible geocaching for the memory impaired.
