I called Garmin with some questions about unlocking. The tech guy told me that
you now need a separate unlock code for each GPS. That's $150 for an upgrade to
my two IQs.
Used to be that each unlock would work with two units. The guy said that had
changed in May.
What gives?
There was no real credible rationale given to consumers.
Garmin said that their dropping the prices at the same time the two unlock policy was changed made the cost about the same in the end. In other words, if you would have paid the $150 +/- MSRP for a new retail version, you are now paying $150 +/- for two upgrades.
Kind of makes me wonder if the folks that are offering "third party" unlocks for Garmin products have dropped their prices too. They used to want $40 to unlock a $150 mapping product (City Navigator for example) to your Unit I.D.
If the cost of unlocks of questionable legality has stayed linear, they should have dropped their prices to about $20.
To Whom It May Concern. Please spare me the ethics lecture, I'm just discussing some of the realities of life, not advocating that anyone do anything that they are not comfortable with.
