When moving slowly (climbing or difficult walking) the odometer on my Vista HCx shows a much shorter distance than the track indicates and what a Topo map shows.
Is this to be expected?
I'm not familiar with that unit but my GPS-II+ exhibited the same phenomenum. That unit was designed in the bad old days of SA where your location would wander around up to 100m while you weren't moving. These days current units are subject to far less wandering given, decent satellite view, so the problem is far less severe.
