Avoiding theft

I just recently bought a new Magellan Maestro GPS for my car and it is
mounted by its "adhesive disc" and the bracket which comes with the
unit. It is located on the top of the dashboard (mounting to the
windshield is illegal in California), and I can remove the GPS and the
bracket, leaving the disc on the dash, when I leave the car.
There was an article in the newspaper today reporting the high
incidence of theft of these units, with the thieves breaking into the
car to look for the unit when they just see the attachment hardware,
figuring that the GPS is somewhere in the car.
Has anyone come up with any good ideas as to how to deter thieves (the
car itself has an alarm) but that won't save the broken window?
Best,
Bob
