You may have a filed driver install.

1 - Unplug everything Garmin from USB.

2 - Look in the Control Panel > System > Device Manager and see if there is a USB hardware item with a yellow question mark. If there is, remove it. That would be result of a failed attempt at installing a driver and it will not allow the installation of the right driver.

3 - Install Garmin's latest USB drivers, download them here:

http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=591

Nothing apparent will happen when you run the driver install. When you plug in the GPS (with it turned on) it will Plug & Play and complete the install. Worst case, you may have to show the New Hardware Wizard where the drivers are located. On my system they are located in the folder at C:\Garmin\USB_Drivers or C:\Garmin\USB_Drivers\I386.

With the drivers installed, if you turn the GPS on and plug it in you'll probably see the wizard complete the plug and play process the first time you do that.

For the Mass Storage Mode press Menu > Menu > Setup > Interface > choose USB Mass Storage and press Enter. You see the hardware wizard run again (first time only) and then the removable drive should appear.

If you have a new card and have never uploaded a map, the drive will be empty. If you have uploaded maps there will be a \garmin folder. If you used the GPS with the Log Track to Data Card option on you'll see the *.gpx files located on the root.

The *.gpx files can be opened from MapSource or any of several third party utilities like the ones listed here:
