Either
a) Eject the card, put it into a card reader slot
b) Put the GPS into "mass storage mode" after connecting via USB

The option a) is of course clear, but the b) till now I haven't seen
it in windows explorer. I can see every mass storage device, but the
Garmin card. If I connect the GPS to the computer, it recognizes it
but nothing more. Only Garmin software can handle the receiver. Ok,

The b) doesn't work. I can't understand it.

Have you tried plugging it into different USB ports? I haven't
experienced this problem with the Vista HCx (it comes up just fine no
matter how I connect it), but the GPSMAP 60CSx of a friend of mine
refuses to connect when in certain USB ports.

The symptoms are opposite of yours, though; mass storage works fine,
but the garmin protocol doesn't. A couple web forums indicate that it
may be related to hubbed USB ports.

Just a thought...
