I see the Quest has an external antenna option too, so even though it's
not Sirf-III, you can still get great reception by using an external
antenna - as noted in my earlier post.
Thanks all. This leaves me with the following contenders:
* Garmin Quest/2
* Garmin GPSMAP 60CSX
* Magellan CrossoverGPS
I've just downloaded all 3 owners manuals. When I can
find a couple of quiet hours I'll peruse those to get
a better idea of what each device can and cannot do.
Then a trip to a store or two to see what they really
look and feel like. Then pricegrabber et al to find the
best deal ;-)
To me the decision is how much (and how rough) will the hiking use be. I
found that my 60C's beep was plenty for driving prompts, as it is followed
by a prompt screen which shows a high contrast turn instruction... easy to
see what's coming at a glance... I aquired a talking GPS when I started
using it on a motorcycle... I couldn't hear the beep from my 60C on my
intercom (no output jack)....
I use my 60C while hiking a lot, and mount it to the pack strap... it takes
hits all the time, but since it has no moving parts and is built like a
tank... it keeps on working... (very important for GPS's to keep working
when you are relying on them to keep you on track in the mountains, in the
fog)...
I've got friends who have Quests... not particularly impressed with that
model to be honest... seems "too cheap" to me.. Haven't held a Magellan
model in the past few years, so no opinion on that one. I'm a Garmin adict
though, because I use Mapsource to pre-plan my trips... all my data is in
Mapsource format, I know the program, like their GPS's... so I'm stuck (for
now) with Garmin.
