I like CrossOver,
with large 3,5" touch-screen and voice guidance, in-car works like true automotive unit, far more convinient than any handheld GPS, any brand.
Additionally, he has all the features like handheld GPSs: track/wpt recording, waterproof (IPX 5), and pretty solid housing.
You have to decide what will be primary usage for the unit ...
By the way, Magellan announced new series - Tritons - and I think that Magellan Triton 2000 will be the model for you :)
Look at http://www.magellangps.com/products/product.asp?prodID=1910&SEGID=425&tab=1&ajaxlink=1910:features
Hmmm, very interesting. Maybe magellan is not down for the count yet.
Here is more info on the pricing and Triton models:

and an initial, not in depth but helpful, review of the Triton line:

We'll always need someone to keep Garmin scared about their market share, dilute their greed a little, and get them more attuned to the wants, needs, and desires of the buyers and users.
And maybe Magellan will help with that.
The Meridians were much better than the comparable Garmins when they were in their prime, I would not mind at all if Magellan could get back on top of things.
