Continue route optimization after route started?

I wonder if there are auto units that continue to optimize the route
after the route has started?
Route calculation in GPS needs to be fast because the user has limited
patience for the GPS to find a route in the beginning because he/she
would like to start driving as soon as possible. So most units spends
only a few seconds to calculate the route.
However, once a (preliminary) route has been calculated, the unit is
basically sitting idle. It could use these times to optimize the route
to see if it can do better.
Are there any units that does this? I've ran into multiple situations
where I simply do a 'recalculate' while I am in route and it would
give me a better route than it did initially, especially if I am close
to the destination. This clearly indicates it didn't look 'hard
enough' during its initial calculation.
On hour long trips, the unit really do have "all the time in the
world" to see if the route ahead can be optimized further.
Are there any units that does this?
