Does anyone know whether there are topo maps available of India which
can be downloaded in a Garmin GPS (Vista HCx)?

Without a good Indian topo map I think a (Garmin) GPS is useless for
offroad trekking in remote areas of India.

Sure not. FX3 is a painting of a map encoded to be read by Fugawi
only. Garmins take vector elements of data like streets etc and draw
the map out of that in real time.

You could use this FX3 data with Fugawi on a Pocket PC on your bike,
but I am not sure if the Pocket PC will withstand the environment.
