I have a portable soil moisture measuring instrument that can
interface with a GPS receiver to put a longitude and latitude value in
the data file along with the soil moisture data. The requirements for
the serial output are as follows:
NMEA 0183 input/output messages
GGA data string
4800 baud rate
Timing - 1 second
8 data bits
No parity
1 stop bit
We have gotten this to work fine with a Garmin 72 receiver as long as
we set it for NMEA output rather than the proprietary Garmin string.
As of now, we have not been able to get it to work with a Trimble
GeoXT unit. We have connected the serial clip and the null modem
cable to the GeoXT. But, if we connect the cable to a PC and run it
through Hyperterminal, there is no signal coming in. I've looked
through the .pdfs on the Trimble website but haven't found anything to
indicate what setting I should be using.
There is a program called GPS Connector which controls the serial port
output. I think you'll find it under Settings/Connections. You may
need to use this to set the external serial port to NMEA output. If
that doesn't work you might need to look at your cable setup - maybe
you need straight through rather than null modem?
