Cool! I didn't know that. They also carried HP calculators, did they
not? I believe HP developed the program card readers for their early
handheld models precisely for the Apollo missions. The slide rules must
have been their secondary backup in case of communication failure.

The Apollo-Soyuz mission did, but after the Apollo moon missions.
This was a backup to the computer.

That was the first Shuttle Missions that used HP41 calculators.
