Peter,
I recently started using Sprint WWAN with a Novatel U727 modem which,
similarly to your device, has NMEA outputs via COM port. A year or more ago,
I had purchased a copy of Delorme Street Atlas and I use it along with my
U727 to do driving navigation all the time. So, yes, it's possible and I
team these two together to make it work.

I purchased a Sprint 597 Sierra Wireless Modem that connects to the
Sprint cell phone system to provide Internet service in any location.
It also has GPS capability built into it.
The GPS is able to pick up 4-10 satellites in the house. I am able to
pick up 4 right now with the window shade down, so it is very
sensitive. I looked at mapsource and the coordinates seem accurate to
even the corner of the house that the computer is located.
Applications that come with it allow me to see the nearest banks,
hotels or gas stations. The maps are downloaded from the Internet and
come from Microsoft Live Search Maps. Since this is a wireless modem
for the Sprint EvDo cell system, the Internet can be used.
It tells me also the the GPS Port is COM14.
It would be nice if one could make this into a GPS with voice feedback
on a planned route, like my Garmin GPS. Does anyone know how to do
this?
.
