I've used my SPOT while camped out on an 8000ft peak. Seriously, do
you own one of these devices? If not, where do you get your knowledge
of it?
When I first got my SPOT, I wasn't sure about it working under canopy.
To cover my bases, I did a check-in along the road to the campsite but
in the clear, then an additional check-in under moderate canopy. Both
locations worked. Now I skip the tracking in the clear.
Now to be clear, I just check in, I don't track. I set the SPOT down
and just let it do it's thing.

I got my information from the results of SPOT's Primal Quest disaster. I
was looking for someone who has had success with it.
I just use the reporting feature. It worked every time I tried it
without fail. How well would a EPIRB work tracking a race. Well, it
wouldn't. I use the SPOT like an EPIRB, except I have two other
messages other than send in the cavalry.
Even I had an EPIRB, I'd have to have the SPOT as well.It comes in
handy if you want someone to join you in the boonies. Granted, that
person has to be in civilization to get your message.
