International Journal of Intelligent Systems Technologies and
Applications (IJISTA)

Call For papers:
----------------

Special Issue on: *Intelligent Image and Video Processing and
Applications: The Role of Uncertainty*

Guest Editors:

Assistant Professor Manolis Wallace, University of Indianapolis, Athens
Campus, Greece

Professor Stefanos Kollias, National Technical University of Athens, Greece.

Scope:
------

Image and video processing are focused on the problem of semantic
segmentation and on related applications. The difference between now and
before is that now emphasis is on the combination of raw processing
techniques with intelligent expert systems towards the solution of the
considered problems. As we move closer towards the combination and
integration of the two distinct fields, it is becoming apparent that
some issues related to their different nature will have to be tackled.

Specifically, expert systems and intelligent applications in general
typically assume that some information about the world is available;
this information, be it complete or not, is assumed to be known with
precision and certainty. Based on this information, and utilising the
available knowledge, an expert system will then provide a decision or an
assessment of a situation. Image and video processing techniques, on the
other hand, suffer from low quality of the raw media, noise, occlusions,
poor matching of observed objects to theoretical models due to
unexpected deformations and random errors, all of which lead to
uncertain, imprecise and possibly incorrect results. Obviously, expert
systems are not designed to operate with the output of image and video
processing modules as input, and image and video processing modules are
not designed to provide input to expert systems.

This special issue seeks to explore developments in both the field of
expert systems and the field of image and video processing that help
bridge the gap between the two and make their combination possible,
meaningful and robust. In this framework, we would like to invite
contributions that not only fit the aims of IJISTA, but also address the
issue of uncertainty in the output of image and video processing or in
the input of expert systems. Papers can be the presentation of
theoretical findings, applied research results, systems, case studies
etc. Papers should be of a high quality, original, unpublished, and not
submitted elsewhere.

Subject Coverage:
-----------------

The purpose of this special issue on Intelligent Image and Video
Processing and Applications: The Role of Uncertainty is to publish high
quality research that contribute to the combination of raw image and
video processing with intelligent expert systems. Specific topics
include, but are not limited to:

     * Measures of uncertainty in image and video
     * Measures of uncertainty in the results of image and video processing
     * Alleviation or minimisation of uncertainty in image and video
processing
     * Representation models for uncertain image and video processing
results
     * Inferencing and/or reasoning with uncertain and/or imprecise inputs
     * Applications

Notes for Intending Authors:
----------------------------

All papers are refereed through a peer review process. A guide for
authors, sample copies and other relevant information for submitting
papers are available on the Papers Submission section under Author
Guidelines [https://www.inderscience.com/papers/about.php]

To submit a paper, please go to Submission of Papers
[https://www.inderscience.com/papers]

This is our preferred route for submitting papers; please use it if at
all possible. However, if you experience any problems submitting papers
in this way, an alternative route is suggested below.

Submitted papers should not have been previously published nor be
currently under consideration for publication elsewhere.

Important Dates:
----------------

Manuscript submission: *March 27, 2005*

Notification of review results: June 20, 2005

Revised manuscript submission: August 27, 2005

Final notification of acceptance: September 26, 2005

Final paper: October 16, 2005

Prospective authors are invited to optionally submit an abstract to
guest editor Manolis Wallace [mailto:wallace@uindy.gr] by January 10,
2005, in order to best prepare for and expedite the review process.
