.img, is tied up with 'gem'. The gem metafile, format, when asked to save
an image, saves a .gem file, and a .img file to contain the actual
picture.
Have a look at:

Many older packages can read the raw images, while some latter programs
can do it is 'told' the data layout in the file (Maxim can do this). Few
modern packages can do this (there was a licensing' issue regarding the
format).
