Multi-camera imaging via 2 IEEE 1394a firewire cameras

Hi,

I'm student at the Technical University of Braunschweig, Germany, and
currently working on a multi-camera imaging project. The goal is to do
a synchronous snapshot of an object with two cameras, triggered by a
light sensor. Later I will face to set up two synchronous video
streams. Currently I am still doing literature research, so if anyone
has any tips for me, he is welcome to post them.

One of the cameras I will be working with is the Sony DFW-V500. The
other one is not yet determined, but it will be a firewire cam, too.

Now my questions:
1) Is it possible to do a completely synchronous shot with 2 firewire
cams (should work through the asynchronous channel)?
2) The Sony cam can be triggered externally, but (as I read) there is
also an option to trigger the camera via the firewire interface. Has
anyone experiences with that or sources that I can use?
3) As I have an external signal impulse (from the light sensor) I will
probably have to build a small hardware, which triggers the cameras as
well as an optional flash. Does anyone know about a similar
(professional) system?

Thanks for your answers,

Andre

PS: In case I posted to the wrong group, sorry -> maybe you know
another one for me?
