Hi Jonathon,
Low-pass filtering before sub-sampling is a good idea. Your sub-sampled
data will show fewer signs of noise (depending upon the filter and
sub-sample size, of course). You'll want to tailor your low-pass filter
to the expected sub-sample size. For example, bilinear smoothing is
good if you want to sub-sample every other pixel, or so. However,
bilinear smoothing followed by sub-sampling every 50th pixel will most
likely result in a noisy output.
