It does not sound too promising to me, but you might just try edge detection
or thresholding and see what happens. It might just bring out some shapes
that are not so readily apparent. But, in the end, it will be the human
visual system (yours) that will have to see if anything is readable. It may
not work, but it is at least quick and easy to try. I use ImageJ for this
but I am sure that there are many programs that can do the thresholding and
edge detection. I like ImageJ because of my frugal (wife says cheap)
nature, its free.
