Studies suggest that JPEG2000 will give file sizes approximately 25% smaller than JPEG for the same level of visual quality. This is fairly modest so, no, JPEG2000 will not replace JPEG.

It will be *one* of the still image compression standards of the future. One of the others will be JPEG.
