The sensor, the scene, and the illumination.  This
list is a good start, but is not exhaustive.  For
example, if you play with satellite imagery then
you may also need to include the atmosphere.

Another poster referred you to some good books on
digital image processing.  Pretty much any book on
digital image processing will help you at this stage.
