Thank you Vladimir,
I fully agree with you but I was hoping there would be some easier method
than having to locate a step which might be located in any direction in the
image and then go through somewhat complicated algorithms to isolate both
parts of the image.

Hi Bob,
I think you should locate the position of the step at first. After
that, you can fit a separate plane to both subplanes on the two sides
of the step. This should give you much better result than fitting the
whole sample at once.
