You may find an answer, or more importantly a framework for casting
your question, if you read the following paper:
R.L. Kashyap and R. Chellappa, "Estimation and choice of neighbors
in spatial
interaction models of images," IEEE Trans. Info. Theory, 29:1 (1983).
One clue is that Gaussian MRF realizations are quickly synthesized by
fourier-inverting an equivalent 2D spectral density using randomized
phase for each spectral bin.
