detecting porno pics - possible or not?

I recall a vague report in the newspaper several years ago,
about some boffin who claimed he had invented a program
which could recognise pornographic pictures, and thus
would be useful to whosoever wanted to filter this out
of the internet.
I am not aware of such a thing catching on, so I presume
it was a wild claim by an academic who wanted to score
some brownie points and trips to conferences?
