Re: Level set methods

Segmentation, in my opinion, is an area that needs some sort of fusion
approach, or perceptual grouping, to make the techniques useful. All
approaches, level sets, intensity thresholding, snakes, etc, only
loosely couple in shape information, and all are based on some measure
of intensity or local feature. This typically leads to over or
undersegmentation, ie objects that should be perceptually grouped are
broken up, or objects that are distinct get grouped together. Level
sets are possibly the best approach, but even they are lacking in
utility when practical applications are considered.

That thread does not discuss an important consideration, financial funding
via a research assistantship. With a research assistantship, you will be
assigned a thesis topic by your research professor that you may hate.
