Combining multiple photographic exposures into an HDR image

Hi there.

I'm searching for information about how to combine multiple photos with different exposures into an HDR image. I can find many tools out there that do this, but none with open source and, which is worse, no papers describing the technique. I simply don't find any place to start.

Any help?
