Hi! I'm a Chinese student who is interested in image processing. In
our country the classification in scientific fields is different from
US. I wonder what's the difference/relationship between computer
vision and image processing? Is it true that image processing belongs
to computer vision?
What's more I want to know is in US, how many sub-fields has image
processing been divided into and what are they. Is there any famous
paper introducing the classification of this field?
You seem to be looking for the one true
classification of these subjects. This is
not the way researchers in the West tend to
think about the subject. Researchers use
whatever classification best suits the task
they want to investigate, and there are
many such classifications.
One classification scheme I have found
useful is that image processing begins with
natural images, typically from a camera or
other sensor. Computer graphics synthesizes
images from a model. Computer vision also
begins with natural images, and so is a
sub-set of image processing, and is
concerned with *automatically* extracting
information or understanding from the
imagery.
However, there are researchers who would
disagree with this classification, and
areas of research which simply do not fit
into it.
