Re: Which webcam for Linux to do realtime image processing?

I'm looking for some (cheap and thus USB..) color webcams which could do
real 640x480 at 30fps (or maybe 640x480 at 15fps at least) and working
under Linux, for realtime image processing as a hobbyist, for various
purpose like tracking objects or objects recognition. I don't need
optical zoom, autofocus nor motorized head. What could you suggest for
that?

How cheap is cheap?

I had something like 50€ (70 USD) in mind.

The low end firewire cameras can do 640x480 in colour, at 30FPS (in
yuv411 colourspace), and they work very well, since the interface is
standardised.

I don't know this topic very well (I found 1 or 2 models on the web,
around 100€.)

It you still want USB, then try one of these:

In fact, buying one which work under Linux is not a problem, but I asked
on this group because I was looking for one which is of good quality
(withouth too much noise for example) for the purpose of image
processing. I was wondering if a model was more appropriate and well
known for that. I think I'll go for some Philips SPC900NC, which is
supported by the pwc driver.

They present themselves as V4L (2) devices.

If you want a library to get the video in an easy to use format, I
recommend libCVD computer vision library (I'm the maintainer). It's
here:

Interesting. I was unaware of this library.
