Under certain circumstances (using a specially customized microscope)
Fresnel zone interference rings will appear around observed objects.
From these rings the depth of an object can be calculated. Some kindof holography technique. Simple but ingenious it seems. Reportedly
this method is much faster than scanning the different image planes
for focused objects. It is so fast that it is supposed to work for
moving objects..
