Suggest method

Hello all,

For student project I need to solve this problem:
I need to count red and blue dots.

I think about these steps to perform task:
1. Clear an image from scanner and other noise
2. Detect regions
3. Pass data to neural network with backpropagation algorithm

I'm new to image processing. I have a lot of book on my faculty (Image
processing, Computer Vision, Pattern recognition areas) but don't know
from where to start.
Can someone please suggest me methods, solutions, books, or something
to start from.
